The 2024 Festival announced the special Focus on Kazakhstan Programme and showcased the film Bauryna Salu, which received one of the main international awards: Mr Zhanrbek Yeleubek obtained an exclusive Panavision Snow Leopard Award for Best Cinematography.
The film, directed by Mr Askhat Kuchinchirekov, tells about a tradition when grandparents raise the eldest child, and has been officially submitted previously for Oscar Awards 2025 in the Best International Feature Film category. This film is also the holder of the Special Jury Prize at the Cinema Heritage annual international film festival in Paris.
Mr Kuchinchirekov thanked Mr Ibragimov for supporting the recent Asian World Film Festival aimed to give wider global recognition to best Asian, and Kazakh, films.
Askhat Kuchinchirekov, Director of Bauryna Salu, said: “The Asian World Film Festival is an amazing platform that showcases films nominated for Oscars, while film academics meet up for screenings. In the competition which featured the best films from across Asia Zhanrbek Yeleubek received an award for the best cinematography and we also won a grant for the development of cinema in Kazakhstan. The Festival, which has celebrated its 10th anniversary, is a true art project and it’s great that such philanthropists as Shukhrat Ibragimov support this major event and the sharing of Asian cinema, and Kazakhstan culture, with the whole world. I wish AWFF continued success.”
Shukhrat Ibragimov, Chairman of the Asian World Film Festival, said: “It has been a decade since we launched the Festival, and I am very proud of the work of the whole team, including the Founder and Honorary President Mr Sadyk Sher-Niyaz. This year, the jury of the Festival gave one of the awards to Bauryna Salu, and I sincerely congratulate the whole team of our filmmakers from Kazakhstan who have created this wonderful work of cinematic art. It also gives me immense pleasure to note that at the Festival, we have organised a day dedicated to Kazakh cinema, helping to promote the country’s unique cultural heritage to the global audience. Kazakhstan as the country develops fast, demonstrating remarkable growth, and new talented people are opening it to the world.”
