La Compagnie de Traitement des Rejets de Kingamyambo S.A (Metalkol SA), a DRC subsidiary of Eurasian Resources Group (ERG), a global metals and mining company headquartered in Luxembourg, has signed its second Cahier des Charges to support the sustainable development of local communities in the Lualaba Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This renewed commitment reinforces Metalkol SA’s ongoing efforts to foster local development and will benefit nine communities across the villages of Samukonga, Kamimbi, Kipepa, Kashala, Samukinda, and UCK. The Commitment Register is part of the company’s social obligations and in line with the revised Mining Code of the DRC.

The signing ceremony took place under the esteemed patronage of Her Excellency, Ms Fifi Masuka Saini, Governor of Lualaba Province, and was attended by His Excellency, Mr Wamana Tanda Nicodème, Provincial Minister of Mines of Lualaba; ERG Africa CEO, Mr Nicolas Treand; local authorities; representatives of the beneficiary communities; and Metalkol SA staff.

In her address, the Governor expressed her support for the initiative, stating: “This Cahier des Charges is designed to assist Metalkol SA in delivering socio-economic infrastructure and social services to the local communities affected by its operations. I sincerely thank ERG Africa for adhering to the legal requirements and encourage other mining operators to do the same.”

This new Cahier des Charges is the outcome of a structured consultation process between Metalkol SA and the local communities, carried out under the supervision of the authorities.

The projects planned for this period will focus on the following key sectors:

  • Agriculture and livestock farming: Enhancing food security and local economic development

  • Education: Building and equipping school facilities to improve access to education

  • Energy: Connecting communities to the SNEL’ s hydroelectric grid to expand access to electricity and support small-scale local production units

  • Local entrepreneurship: Establishing and equipping a bakery and mid-sized flour mill, aimed at stimulating the local economy and enabling communities to become autonomous and resilient

The implementation of these projects addresses the priority socio-economic needs expressed by each of these communities, promotes alternative livelihoods, and seeks to improve living conditions. The main objective is to ensure that local communities take ownership of the projects. Active community participation is essential to ensure the sustainability of the projects, including the maintenance of the infrastructure provided.

Speaking at the event, Mr Treand, highlighted the Group’s commitment to sustainable development: “Our approach is guided by fundamental values: respect, dialogue, and responsibility. As a good corporate citizen, we are committed to partnering with our host communities. In 2024 alone, ERG Africa supported 58 communities in the DRC, contributing a total of 95 million dollars through the 0.3% DOT contribution and mining royalties as part of its community development initiatives.”

His Excellency, Mr Wamana Tanda called on all stakeholders to rigorously implement the projects outlined in the Cahier des Charges, which he described as an essential step toward sustainable development: “Our expectation does not end with negotiations or signing but focuses especially on implementation. We urge Metalkol SA to deliver in compliance with established standards, call on the local monitoring committee to ensure real-time oversight, and ask the community to safeguard the infrastructure built for them.”

To maintain a strong, collaborative relationship with its communities, Metalkol SA has grievance management mechanisms in place that enable dispute resolution, promote open dialogue, and ensure effective communication with all stakeholders.

Speaking on behalf of the Local Development Committee, Chief Kamimbi encouraged community cooperation: “We call on our communities to support Metalkol SA in successfully implementing this initiative. Let us work together to turn this Cahier des Charges into tangible results. We also ask our children to protect Metalkol SA and its operations.”

In addition, Metalkol SA will continue working to integrate local entrepreneurs into its supply chains – an approach designed to strengthen the socio-economic resilience of communities and foster the growth of local businesses.
