The ArcelorMittal Long Products Luxembourg sites have received a renewal of their ResponsibleSteel™ certification for the next three years, following an in-depth audit. Steel is the most widely used material in the world and the transport, automotive, infrastructure, packaging, construction, energy and household facilities sectors are increasingly demanding responsibly sourced raw materials. ResponsibleSteel™, the world’s leading steel certification program, aims to address these concerns.
This summer, the ArcelorMittal Long Products Luxembourg sites, Belval, Differdange and Rodange, had their ResponsibleSteel™ certification renewed. Three years ago, the Luxembourg sites were part of the very first wave of ResponsibleSteel™certification in the world, recognising the business’ high standards, whether it concerns our environmental impact, our impact on the communities in which we operate and with our employees. Since 2021, we have questioned and further improved our standards related to the environment, governance, and sustainability.
The certification has 13 principles based on a series of criteria that the sites to be certified must meet in an exemplary manner. Any site wishing to be awarded with ResponsibleSteel™ must undergo a detailed audit conducted by a third-party body. The final decision is made by an independent certification committee. The re-certification process began in January 2024 with the start of the audit by an external and independent company, AFNOR. This in-depth analysis of our sites covers the production method, the management of our land, our by-products, the workplace of all employees, their safety and health, as well as the management of our relations with external stakeholders, good communication about our activities and transparency with the public. It allows us to identify areas for improvement to which we respond with concrete action plans to keep our sites up to the level of requirement of our internal and external stakeholders.
Concrete actions
Today, the Luxembourg sites are developing 13 major projects following the ResponsibleSteel™ audit. Concrete action plans such as the launch of an impact study of noise and vibrations on residents living near our sites, and a new management plan for our waste and by-products, including the inclusion of their sustainable recovery in contracts with service providers and better monitoring of their lifecycle with the objective of 100% of by-products being recovered by 2030. Once the audit is completed, the sites receive a detailed report including points for improvement to accompany the certification.
A summary of the audit is available on the ResponsibleSteel™ website
Guilhem Dollé, Head of Environment, Energy & ESG of ArcelorMittal Long Products Luxembourg underlined: “The value of this certification is recognized by our customers, many of whom have contacted us to find out if the sites were going to be recertified. Thanks to this certification, they can benefit from a responsible supply chain that complies with their l rules and ethics. The certification also shows governments and financial markets that the steel sector is realizing its intention not only to decarbonize its production, but also to institute responsible ESG practices.”
ResponsibleSteel™ is a non-profit organization that allows each site to prove that their various processes meet standards rigorously defined by social, environmental and governance criteria that make up the ResponsibleSteel™ standard.
