EUROCHAMBRES

Mr Luc Frieden was elected as President of EUROCHAMBRES for the 2022-2023 term during today’s General Assembly. Mr Frieden, President of the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce, will take over the role on 1 January from the current EUROCHAMBRES President, Christoph Leitl.

Luc Frieden has been Chairman of the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce (a public law Chamber) since 2019. He is a member of the board of directors of several companies and organisations and a practicing lawyer. From 1998 to 2013, he served as Minister of Justice and Minister of Finance of Luxembourg. He was a member of the Eurogroup and the Ecofin Council of Ministers and chaired the 2013 Annual Meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.  He graduated in law from the University of Paris 1 Sorbonne, the University of Cambridge and Harvard Law School.

President Leitl expressed strong support for his successor: “Luc Frieden will take over as Europe’s economic recovery begins to gather momentum, and EUROCHAMBRES has a vital role to play in working with the EU institutions to maintain this positive trajectory. Given Luc’s business acumen, political experience and international outlook, I am confident that the European chamber network will fulfil this responsibility to great effect."

Mr Frieden set out his priorities to the members of EUROCHAMBRES: “The post-pandemic recovery is a top priority for businesses and our chamber network. Restoring and deepening this single market will be a key element to reboot prosperity and resilience. Our stakeholder involvement in the policy debate will be essential to help businesses lead the twin green and digital transition and secure skills fit for the future.” Mr Frieden also highlighted the importance of the EU’s trade agenda: “EUROCHAMBRES must actively promote free and fair international trade relations with the EU candidate countries, as well as with the major economic actors such as the United States, China and Russia”.

EUROCHAMBRES Deputy-Presidents

The EUROCHAMBRES General Assembly also re-elected its three current Deputy Presidents for a further two-year term:

  • Vladimir Dlouhý, President, Chamber of Commerce of Czech Republic
  • Ian Talbot, Chief Executive of Chambers Ireland
  • Stephan Müchler, President and CEO, Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Southern Sweden

President Leitl added: “Ian, Stephan and Vladimir have provided invaluable support to me, not least as we worked with chambers and policy-makers to help our businesses survive the recession, revive their activities and now start to drive the recovery. They will, I am sure, continue to contribute greatly to the development of EUROCHAMBRES throughout Luc Frieden’s term.”
